House Hunters International (OK, not really)

Hunting for a new house is probably quite the adventure for everyone. This is only our second time to do so and this time around, our timeline is a lot shorter (It took us about 9 months to commit the first time) and our choices are much more limited. Hello, I'm Hearin and I'm moving to a town of less than 10,000 people, gulp.
Anyhow, we saw 9 houses this weekend, here's the rundown...
House #1, Wharton 3/2 nice street, kind of blah
House #2, Wharton 4/2.5, 3500 sq feet (we could loose each other and possibly our own child in that house, and an offer was already accepted that day)
House #3 Wharton 3/2, first reaction, "Oh wow, gold carpet."
House #4 El Campo, newer construction, first reaction, "Where are all of the neighbors?"
House #5 El Campo, cute neighborhood, nice features like wood floors, really wierd bedroom layout and needed lots of updates (This is a common theme in El Camp/Wharton)
House #6 El Campo, some updates with nice landscaping. Some mysterious stains next to air conditioning vent and quite a large buldge behind the bathroom tile...This one was nicer than some of the others but would mean a 20 minute commute for Paul. Wouldn't be a big deal except he'll be on call every other week and driving back and forth multiple times a night could get really old, really fast.
House #7 Wharton, really cute small neighborhood, great price, smallish bedrooms, needs some cosmetic updates (This one's a maybe)
House #8 Wharton, very nice street/neighborhood, awesome size, 4/2, at the top of our price range but needs minimal updates.
For now we are pondering house 7 and 8.

Wait, didn't I say we viewed 9 houses this weekend? Oh, yes I did. The other house must have been temporarily blocked from my memory as I literally turned and ran out about halfway through the tour. Yes friends, it was that bad. It was a for sale by owner (as are houses 7 and 8) and Paul found it on craigs list. The description was wonderful, "hardwood floors, beautiful landscaping, original features, almost an acre, backs up to the country club." So, Paul emails the lady; she's really really into telling us about the house; her husband is a doctor. All sounding promising, right? Paul went to see it on Tuesday and he was able to rule it out on his own, but insisted that I come see it with him on Friday.
I have never seen anything like it in my life. I don't even know that I have the words to describe the creepiness level that I experienced. The whole house rolled (obvious foundation issues) "Updates" included one room painted gold and purple and a hand done mosaic backsplash (possibly completed by a 6 year old), it was dirty and dingy with really wierd paintings of children hanging on the wall. Windows were sealed shut with spray foam insullation and there was a mysterious neon light in one bathroom (This is when I turned around and ran out).

I'm now mentally blocking these images again. We'll keep you posted on the progress.
